Beyond Hate

  • Cinéma

Ené cho at the show CITADELLE by Mélodie Lasselin & Simon Capelle, at La rose des vents, national stage of Lille metropolis
One night in September 2002, 29-year-old François Chenu was beaten to death in a park by three skinheads because he was gay. Thanks to a long work of preparation off camera, the young man’s family agrees to turn themselves over to Olivier Meyrou’s camera and talk about the facts again, thus entering into a long therapeutic process intended to overcome their pain. Before and during the trial at the Assize, through interviews with defense lawyers, civil plaintiffs and the Chenu family, the documentary explores the parents' struggle to avoid being consumed by hatred, to avoid the spiral of violence and remain faithful to the humanistic values that have animated them all their lives. More than a film about homophobia, Beyond Hate is a plea for tolerance and respect for others.
