The words they once had
Film by Raphaël Pillosio (2024)
1h24
National exit
1962, at the end of the Algerian War, activists for Algerian independence are released from prison in Rennes. One night, the filmmaker Yann Le Masson films them. They tell him their vision for the future of Algeria and the place that women must occupy in the new society to be built. Fifty years later, while the soundtrack has disappeared, Raphaël Pillosio goes in search of these women. Two deaf people are busy reading on the lips of women filmed by Yann Le Masson, and reveal fragments of sentences, words amputated by the twists and turns of the camera. A film-investigation where the few activists still alive discover their old testimonies and tell us their silent story. The reconstruction of the lost soundtrack will remain pending, no happy-end will come to solve the absence, cancel the fierce operation of time. An essay film on cinema that shows their disappearance, and forever, keeps them alive.
