Guided tour led by a guide-lecturer in her Grand place, the historic heart of Comines, between the Heritage House, the public garden, the Saint Chrysole church, the Town Hall...
Circuit dedicated to the theme of the «3 powers» - La Seigneurie (the castle - the donjon), the Church (the bell tower/the campanile), la Cité, les Bourgeois (the hall - the belfry/the civil campanile) :
You will discover on this occasion their respective history, from their birth, the pages of their coexistence in the Middle Ages and under the Old Regime, in particular the long chapter of the progressive emancipation of the «bourgeois», the constitution of the «communal» freedoms and the 'civil community', and this, observing the archival, archaeological, and architectural heritage which bear witness to it.
But still...:
On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the inscription "World Heritage" of the belfry of the City Hall of Comines and 22 others, by UNESCO, as well as the 30th anniversary of the recognition of the church Saint Chrysole -under the title of religious buildings- by the European Commission, it is proposed to you, to dive into the oldest pages of Cominoise history, in the shadow of its emblematic towers:
- Since ancient times, in the footsteps of Chrysole, founder of the local Christian community,
- In the Middle Ages, during the birth of a Cominese seigneury, then the progressive constitution -to the north and south of the Lys- of the 'City',
- During the coexistence of the «3 powers», feudal, clerical and civil, in the Middle Ages, at the Renaissance and under the Old Regime, within their entities: the lordship, the parish and the commune...
What to see on this occasion... :
This commented tour will notably allow you to discover the material heritage of this centuries-old "imbrication" of powers, through archives (parchment privilege charters), archaeological remains, stained glass windows, models... interconnection including the church and the City Hall ("rebuilt" both in the 1920s) are its heirs.
