This summer, the Sacred Art Center of Lille is renewing itself once again by welcoming a renowned artist. Exceptionally, the works of the collection La Collection de la Passion – Gilbert DELAINE will remain in our reserves and will not be exhibited during this season.
The artist Sergio FERRO, whose poignant "Way of the Cross – The Steps of the Passion" is part of our collection, offers an exceptional exhibition bringing together his most remarkable works, in perfect resonance with our favorite theme: the Passion of Christ.
These canvases, imbued with a deep humanity, evoke this dark and suffering Humanity through an iconography and a Christian symbolism, inspired by the passages of the Gospels relating to the Passion of Christ.
'The Passion of Jesus is at the foundation of Christianity. As a foundation, it is the structuring principle of several religious movements. In the Catholic Church, many central objects of her ritual refer to her: the cross, the bread and wine of the Eucharist, the crown of thorns, the nails, etc.
Various interpretations, such as those elaborated by the Theology of Liberation, see in the Passion of Christ an allegory of the sufferings of the most humble layers of the population of the different social systems. In Brazil (where I come from), the tragic situation of several groups of the population can be considered equivalent to that of Christ during his Passion.
For example, those of the Ianomami Indians of the Amazon, young black people from slums, landless and homeless, and so many others excluded from the said Western civilization. At the international level, it is enough to recall that of the Palestinians. I dedicate this exhibition to all of them.
